    [2004. 2. 23. 에 누군가의 부탁으로 번역 해 봄]

"11'09''01 September 11 - Chile invasion by US"

Dear Mothers, Fathers, the loved ones those who died Sep. 11th in New York.
I am a Chilean and I live in London, so I like to tell you we perhaps have something in common.
Your loved ones murdered as mine were.
We share a date, Sep. 11th. Tuesday, Sep. 11th.

In 1970, there was the election.
I was eighteen, and I voted for the first time.
We had these beautiful dreams. To build a society in which people could share the fruits of their work and those of the country.
So in Sep. 1970 we all went vote and we won.

“The sky fills up with flags/ Red, white, blue/ Where our history starts/ in each street/ each crossroads has/ voices like waves/ in an infinite ocean/ fists are agitated in the air/ like a mountain in the sea”

There was milk and the education for the children.
And used lands were given to the landless peasants.
Coal, copper mines, and the main industries became owned by all of us.
For the first time in our lives people had dignity.

“I rely on the intelligence of the people/ people who organize themselves are intelligent/ then, why be afraid of the organization of the people?”

I didn’t know how dangerous that was.
Your secretary of the state, Henry Kissinger announced,
“I don’t see why we should be stunned by let our country go communism due to their irresponsibility of its own people.”
Our democratic decisions, our votes were not relevant.
The market and the profits were more important than the democracy.
From that moment onwards, our pain and your pain were legalized.
Your president Nixon said that he would make our economy scream.
He told CIA to play the direct role in organizing the military uprising, a coup d’Etat.

Ten million dollars more if necessary were available to get rid of our president, Salvador Allende.
Friends, your leaders set out the destroyers.
They provoked the transport strike that almost paralyzed our economy.
They stopped all trades between us which created the chaos.
They worked with those in our country who would not accept our victory.
Your dollars supported neo-fascist groups who brought the violence to the street and bombed factories and power stations.

    Amazingly, it didn’t work.

“Allende! The people are on your side/ I am a Chilean/ I defend the Allende government/ It is the government of the people/ we re-affirm/ our rights to build/ a future/ of justice and freedom”

In municipal elections, we actually increased our supports.
    So what the US do?

“On Sep. the 11th, enemies’ freedom committed an act of war against our country, and the night fell on a different world, a world of freedom itself is under attack.”

On Sep. 11th, enemies’ freedom committed an act of war against our country.
On the first light of that morning, troops and tanks advanced to our presidential palace.
Allende, his ministers, and advisors were inside.
Allende did not flee when the palace of Moneda was on fire.

“They have the power/ to control us/ but our social progress cannot be stopped/ neither by the crime nor the violence/ in the history we belong/ it is the people who wrote it/ Viva Chile/ Viva People/ Viva Workers”

    He was murdered.
    He was murdered.
    Tuesday, our Tuesday too
    11th, Sep. 1973
The day they destroyed our lives forever,

I got shot through my knee, and later they smashed my head against the dirt road.
They hit me so many times that I sometimes lost my consciousness.

“You left to work/ on the Tuesday of the September/ in the besieged streets/ of Santiago/ streets of the deaf by the grapeshot/ alleys plug with treason/ you were not found in the deaths on the ground/ you left to work to Madri and you did not return/ I foamed the streets/ I went to the downtown/ I searched you, I searched you/ I asked whether you were seen/ on my hand / a small photograph of you/ a smile of another time illuminated your eyes/ Where are you?/ Where are you?/ at a waste ground/ the smashed eyes/ the broken body/ but your intact dreams/ you left to work to Madri and you did not return”

One day, in prison, I pulled myself to the grid
And I saw German Castro being tied by arms
    He couldn’t walk.
He was bleeding from the ears
They broke his bones and then they murdered him.

We learned about how the torture goes by the officers who trained in the army schools of the United States.
We learned about those who disemboweled(뜻: 내장이 끄집어내진), thrown out from the helicopters, and those who were tortured in front of their children and spouse.
Do you know what they did?
They put electricity to the genitalia parts.
They put rats into the women’s vaginas.
They trained dogs to rape women.
And then we learned about the caravan of the death.
The general who went from town to town ordered the executions in random.
    30,000 were murdered.
    30,000!

The ambassador of Chile complained about the torture.
But Kissinger replied, “Tell him to cut out the political science lectures.”
General Pinochet who organized the coup, smiled,
And accepted the secretary of states’ congratulations of the job well-done
And the dollars started flow into Chile.

    They called me a terrorist.
(They) sentenced me life in prison without trial or defense.
I released after five years, but I had to leave my country for the safety of my friends.
I cannot go back to Chile now.
Even though it’s the only thing I think of.
    Chile is my home.
But what happened to my children?
They were born here in London.
I cannot sentence them to exile like I was.
I cannot do that now but I long to go home with all my heart

    Saint Augustin said,
“Hope had two beautiful daughters, Anger and courage. Anger is the way things are, and the courage to change them.”

Mothers, Fathers, the loved ones those who died in New York
Soon it will be the 29th anniversary of our Tuesday, 11th of Sep.
And the first anniversary of yours,
    We will remember you.
I hope you will remember us.

    Pablo.
